Homosexuality & Changing Indian cinema
2 news recently read & seen actually is the prime point of this post. Days before, i was reading about a case filed in the Kerala court by 2 female, urging their rights to live together. They are presently living together for months.
Today's NDTV's Mumbai Live has given an interesting information about how bollywood is handling homosexuality. For the news, there are presently 3 movies on sets dealing with homosexuality, the top being a film named "GirlFriend" about a lesbian & a lover triangle. There is another movie similar to that is also under production. Apart from that, there is also hindi (or rather hinglish) movie called "Pigmy" which deals with the subjects of Male prostitutes in mumbai.
The only lesbian content movie (not exactly a lesbian movie) in recent times is the much controversial "Fire" by deepa mehta. I havent' come across movies dealing with these kinds of sensitive issues in south indian languages.
Thru my various friends' circles & hang outs, i have always heard of one guy picking up one aunty, another guy maintaining an office goer, internal office relationships and so on and so forth. Saras knows a few guys with like this additional skillset (even saras too....;-))But i havent' thought about making that into a movie form. Atleast, now the mainstream, common issues are coming into the highlight of the movie makers.
This now gives me the guts into working on many possibilities in terms of writing scripts on untouched issues like local politics, street fights, puppy loves, affairs etc. If not today, maybe one day with everything on digital, i can shoot a movie, as like writing this blog.
My question & reaction to all is, will the bollywood treat these movies with the seriousness involved with the issues ? or Are they just trying to sensationalise & tantalise an issue and trying to make a bug out of it ? Is bollywood or rather Indian cinema has come to some standards, where we are in a position to have a deeper understanding of the subjects & issues we deal with. These questions need to be answered with their 100% conviction, coz, you can always expect a huge crowd for any lesbian related movie, as there are two female stars involved, that adds more flesh to film reels, fills the box office.
This also raises the perspective of the way urban indian is being viewed today. We exchange Parattas for Piazzas, Coffee for Cappocino, stiched shirts for Van Heusen and now home made dramas for homosexuality. Atleast, you can always expect a few newer thinking of the way the screenplay & narration will move in these movies.
There was a romatic era in the early 90's followed by Mafia era in late 90's and early 2000 followed by Item No Songs ( just go back in time, the Helen's , Jayamalini's, Anuradhas', Silk smitha's, Disco Shanthi's) are back with a vengence, and now more deeper into subjects like Homosexuality. How will this trend be taken by the viewers. Wait & Watch.
